Tom Petty wrote this song during the country’s bicentennial year when everything was red, white and blue everywhere. It has been rumored that the song was based on the suicide of a girl from the University Of Florida but Petty insists that’s an urban legend. It was really written while Tom was living in an apartment in Encino, California. He would listen to the cars go by and it sounded like the ocean to him. He wrote the song on a Gibson Dove acoustic guitar. As many people know, the shape of the guitar is very feminine and that was a perfect inspiration for this piece. It was easy to combine the curves into the subject’s back. From there I simply imposed the Dove guitar pick guard and markings.
