The fact that the full-size mechanical shark from “Jaws” gave the film crew so many problems became a blessing in disguise. “Bruce”, as the shark was nicknamed, was originally written in the opening scene attacking the young blonde Chrissie. But because of filming delays caused by the uncooperative prop, Steven Spielberg was forced to use a “less is more” approach to the first attack and throughout most of the film. It’s been written that some of the most frightening sequences in “Jaws” are those where we don’t even see the shark. This is precisely the method I used when doing a painting of one of my favorite movies. In the painting, you do not see the cause of the agony, only the agony. Fear is felt more by what you don’t see rather than what you do see.
